Makerspace

A Makerspace is a shared community space where people can come together and collaborate while sharing tools, resources and knowledge. Makerspaces can include a range of equipment and instructions from industrial arts and electronic & robotic technologies to software development and digital arts.

*Note* Several items in the Makerspace require material recovery costs. The associated charges for materials in the Makerspace are at cost and are not for profit.

A photo of the Dremel 3D20 printer

We are once again making available 3D Printing services thanks to a donation of the Dremel 3D20 printer by a generous patron.

How to use it?

Design a 3D object or find an object through websites like Thingiverse (where users share their own designed for others to use) If an object needs supports to not fall when printing then it may be added to the software Dremel Digilab 3d Slicer which will allow you to scale a model inside the available design space and add supports if needed to your build. It will be exported as a .gcode file which can be submitted to the library for printing. If no supports are needed you may just submit your .stl file.

On Thingiverse we found this Obelisk model by drxenocide and downloaded the files.

Then adding the files into the Dremel 3D software, we got a .gcode files to use in the 3D printer.

A few hours after adding the .gcode file to the 3D printer, we have cool new models to paint for a display!

What does it cost?

After a model is printed we will weigh the grams of the final product. Fees are meant to cover the cost of filament, resources, and staff time. You may donate filament of the specific specifications listed below to receive a value of credit. Based on it's weigh:

  • 1-10g | $2.00
  • 11-25g | $5.00
  • 26-50g | $10.00
  • 51-100g | $20.00
  • Over 100g | $0.20/g.

What kind of Filament does it use?

The Dremel 3D20 printer requires a filament diameter of 1.75 Millimeters and can be loaded with 0.75kg or 1kg spools of PLA plastic.

What colour of Filament do we have?

Currently the library is offering:

  • White PLA

When new spools are acquired or donated we will update this list.
